First Nations Book of the Month - School Bundle
A whole-school digital resource bundle helping educators embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across Foundation to Year 6 through carefully selected First Nations children’s books.
Books are one of the most powerful ways teachers and students can learn from First Nations peoples. They can open up important conversations, support intercultural understanding and help students connect with the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
But knowing what books exist, which ones to use across different year levels, and how and when to use them can be difficult and time-consuming.
The First Nations Book of the Month School Bundle has been created to make that easier for teachers, year level teams and whole schools. This year-long digital resource bundle gives schools access to the First Nations Book of the Month editions from Foundation to Year 6, with one carefully selected First Nations book for each year level, each month.
Jordyn Green from The Yulang Effect has carefully curated each book selection, personally read every book included, and provided practical support so teachers can explore First Nations literature with greater confidence and less hesitation.
Across the School Bundle, students are supported to learn about:
- identity, belonging, family and community,
- Country, Place and caring for the environment,
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, cultures and knowledge systems,
- truth-telling and First Nations histories,
- the Stolen Generations,
- activism, resistance and democratic change,
- significant dates and moments in Australian history,
- art, storytelling, sport, science and cultural knowledge,
- and the ongoing strength, diversity and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The School Bundle is designed to support a whole-school approach to embedding First Nations perspectives through quality children’s literature. Books have been carefully placed across year levels and months to help build knowledge over time, with consideration of age, maturity, and significant dates throughout the year.
Each year level edition has also been cross-checked against relevant Australian Curriculum outcomes, including HASS, Science, The Arts, H&PE and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross-Curriculum Priority.
Please note: Books are not included in this bundle and must be sourced separately. The resource recommends book placement, provides supporting information and links learning to curriculum, but it is the responsibility of the purchaser or school to source the books.
This bundle may be purchased by a school for use across multiple classrooms, or by an individual teacher who would like access to all year levels for planning, reference or flexible use. The School Bundle provides access to every year level edition at a discounted price.
