First Nations Book of the Month - Foundation
A year-long digital resource helping Foundation teachers embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives through carefully selected First Nations children’s books.
Books are one of the most powerful ways teachers and students can learn from First Nations peoples. They can open up important conversations, support intercultural understanding and help students connect with the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
But knowing what books exist, which ones to use, and how and when to use them can be difficult and time-consuming.
First Nations Book of the Month – Foundation has been created to make that easier. This year-long digital resource gives Foundation teachers one carefully selected First Nations book to read with their class each month, along with supporting information to help use each book in a meaningful and age-appropriate way.
Jordyn Green from The Yulang Effect has carefully curated each book selection, personally read every book included, and provided practical support so teachers can explore First Nations literature with greater confidence and less hesitation.
This Foundation edition supports students in their first year of school to learn about:
- identity and belonging,
- family and community,
- caring for Country,
- friendship and emotions,
- listening to and learning from Elders,
- respect and inclusion,
- and the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and languages.
Each book has been selected with careful consideration of the age and maturity of Foundation students. The learning is gentle, accessible and purposeful, while still building strong foundations for future learning.
Books have also been cross-checked against relevant Australian Curriculum Foundation outcomes, including HASS, Science, The Arts, H&PE and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross-Curriculum Priority.
